Where do you get your news? (and I don’t mean the every-day, always depressing “the world is going to end” kind)

I mean the kind about things you’re actually interested in. In my case (which may also be your case considering you’re reading my blog), it would be new books to read, what’s going on in the writing/publishing world, and of course all things sci-fi (books, tv shows, movies, etc.). How do you stay “in the know” regarding what’s going on in the world around you?

I ask because I’m looking for new sites to bookmark, to keep me up-to-date on a daily basis with things I deem relevant.

Two sites I follow for sci-fi articles are Blastr and io9. For instance, thanks to Blastr, I found out that Kristen Stewart turned down the role of Lois Lane in the Superman reboot (wtf is she thinking?!?). On io9, I read about the awesome new sci-fi(ish) shows that might debut this fall on network tv (I am most excited about the adaptation of Stephen King’s “the Dark Tower”). Annnnnd I found out via entertainment weekly that Warner Bros Studio is remaking King’s “The Stand” (I literally LOLd when I read #10, M-O-O-N)!

As for new book releases, and info on the writing/publishing front, I follow a TON of different blogs that usually keep me in the loop. Some of my favorite blogs on writing are linked on the sidebar on the right, feel free to check them out (if you’re not already following them). There’s also Goodreads for book reviews, but I have so many books on my TBR list already that I really don’t need to go looking for more at the moment!!! ;-)

So I’m asking you, readers – where do you get your news from? Do you have sites you check daily (or more often?) for scoopage? Can you recommend some sites I should check out? Let me know in the comments section. Have a great weekend!

Google is a huge tool for me. I research different parts of the writing process to keep me sane. For instance right now I'm playing the waiting game so I'll do 'ways to cope' posts to keep in with how to handle things.

More or less I follow blogs, lots of them, to keep me in the know!

You could certainly do worse than reading Tor.com and PinkRaygun.com for sci-fi related news! (also, I write for them, which makes them extra special)

As for book news (particularly related to sci-fi), check out John Scalzi's blog, Whatever. (http://whatever.scalzi.com) Scalzi is a successful sci-fi author. I've yet to read a single one of his books (I hope to remedy this soon!), but I'm in LOVE with his blog, both for his insights into the sci-fi publishing industry (he's the current president of the Science Fiction Writers of America) and his no-nonsense advice to writers about making a living in this writing business.

Also, you should follow @book_tour, @weegee, @ami_with_an_i, and @pablod on Twitter for lots of pub industry related goodness! :)

For movie info, I follow Dezmond on Hollywood Spy, http://hollywood-spy.blogspot.com/

For UFO and other strange phenomenon I check out Coast to Coast now and again. It doesn't have a blog, but if you're ever looking for story fodder, this place is a gold mine.

Wow thanks for the quick responses!

Jen - that's a good idea, google is a wealth of info

Teresa - I've added Tor & Pink Raygun to my favorite sites, and followed the peops you recommended. Gonna check out the Scalzi guy's blog next. I know I've heard of him, but my memory is pretty freaking awful

Maria - oooooh I love me some UFO & alien stuff. Thanks for the recommendation!

For SciFi scoops, http://geekygirlslovescifi.blogspot.com/ and http://scifipulse.net/ are pretty good blogs. Honestly, my time available for reading on the net is limited. I get most of my SciFi news from podcasts (all available from websites or iTunes). Slice of SciFi (http://www.sliceofscifi.com/) is my main source. The recently launched The Morning Stream podcast (http://frogpants.com/podcasts/tms/) is not genre specific, but these guys are SciFi fans so I'm hearing related things there now too. For SciFi Publishing insight I listen to Adventures in SciFi Publishing(www.adventuresinscifipublishing.com/). I realy like being able to listen in the car or even at work on occassion--and they are entertaining, too.
